The Condar Digital Catalytic Monitor was designed for stoves and inserts where conventional catalytic probe thermometers would be inaccessible or difficult to see. This is especially true for stoves by Vermont Castings (Defiant, Encore and Winter Warm models), Jøtul (Fireflight 12), Clayton Stove (Clay 60 Fireplace), Country Comfort (350-CC), Englander (24-JC) and Travis (Fireplace Xtrordinair).

A catalytic monitor is an excellent investment both for getting the most efficiency from your stove and monitoring the condition of your combustor. Fires burning at just the right temperature give the best value for fuel burned, give off the least pollution, and extend the life of your combustor. Fires that are too cool make creosote that causes chimney fires and clogs combustors. Fires that are too hot waste fuel and can trigger chimney fires as well.
Vermont Casting’s Defiant
(above) and Encore models
are good examples of catalytic
wood stoves that need the 9-86.
TO USE THE 9-86:

Place the monitor in a conveniently visible place, well away from the heat of the stove or fireplace. After engaging the combustor, watch the monitor for a couple of minutes to be sure combustor has been activated. When properly activated, the temperature will steadily rise from 500° up to 700° and 1700°, depending on the design of your stove and the placement of the probe. Should your monitor become damaged, replacement probes and cables are available for purchase.

OPERATING ZONES FOR THE 9-86:

 500°  to 1000°   — Engage the combustor
                      (will vary among different stoves)
1000°  to 1700°  — Best operating temperature
  Above   1700°  —  Too hot

Vermont Casting’s WinterWarm
Fireplace Insert is another
example of a setup requiring
the 9-86.

When installing the 9-86, you may find that there is no hole opening for a probe-type meter. It is possible that a certified chimney sweep that services woodstoves could help you with deciding where and how to drill a hole for the probe. Visit www.ncsg.org for help finding a certified sweep in your area.
